After having heart surgery this winter, I lost my voice. My vocal cords were nicked during intubation, which was “A less than optimal outcome of surgery”, I was told.
I have been on vocal rest for the last 3 months (meaning very limited or no talking). This prolonged silence has completely changed my perspective.
It’s frustrating not being heard, because it’s important to be able to speak your mind. If you can’t share your ideas, do they even have any value?
Loosing one’s voice is a timely metaphor for many people’s struggles right now. Exploring voicelessness as a theme in my art is helping me heal.

Now my vocal cords are scarred, and I am struggling to not sound like I spend my time smoking and drinking whiskey. I recently had the first of 3 surgeries to hopefully make my voice stronger.
